Does anyone come here anymore?

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:18 pm by Marigold

I don’t think so.. :(
So quiet in here.
I know it’s cuz I don’t update often enough but I’ve been so busy here, it’s not even funny! I barely have a moment to sit down. I’m always rushing about and half the time I’m not sure what’s it for. LOL. But I’m happy and that’s all that matters.

Let me share some gossip with you. My family is nothing if not brimming with juicy drama. I swear now I know why I’m such a drama queen! LOL!! And I have loads of drama to tell you about but I’ll pick just one or two for now.Haha.

So my brother wants to get engaged to this girl. He’s not even 21 yet and we were all shocked that he wanted this. Another reason why he caught us off guard was because he’s always been somewhat of a player. This week this girl and another week, another. So you can imagine our surprise when he declared that he had found the girl of his dreams and she’s the only one for him. Initially we all ignored him and gave him all sorts of lectures on love and life but he won’t budge an inch.

A few days ago he gave us an ultimatum and said we have to make a formal proposal to this girl’s parents or else. I’m not sure what the ‘else’ entailed but I’d rather not find out. The brother is known for his rather fearless nature. LOL. So my dad said he’d call a family meeting and there will be a voting of sorts to determine if we should go ahead with the proposal or not. We all thought Papa was kidding but he was actually serious so I sent out invitations to the uncles to come over and have their say.

Here’s a little catch in this story; this girl is has a very different cultural background from us and my uncles previously visited her parents’ village to discover that their culture and setup is drastically different from our own. This is another point that deterred my father a lot. He is not one to decline someone based on their social or cultural status etc. but he said he believed that a certain amount of similarity in family backgrounds helps a couple’s compatibility. I personally didn’t think much of this cuz it’s the girl who will be moving here in our family and not the other way round. She lives and studies in Islamabad anyway so it’s not like she isn’t aware of how we are.

Anyway, in the mean time, I finally decided to take the brother seriously and asked him if I could at least meet this hoor of his dreams. He was more than eager to comply. So me and my husband and brother went out for some tea with this girl (and needless to say, we had to pick up the check since the little brother is among other fine things, a miserly brat). So I didn’t learn much from this meeting at all. She was incredibly shy and quiet and though she was pleasant enough looking, I wouldn’t call her a “bomb” (like my husband complained)!!! LOL!!

Moving on, the big family meeting was called this past Saturday and Papa and Brother debated and no doubt that Papa won everyone over with his arguments. He was a great debater in his time and he hasn’t lost his touch! lol!! The brother had really no chance to begin with!! haha!! In the end he resorted to throwing a tantrum and begging everyone for their votes. Still no luck! However, we could all see how serious he was and of course, in some amount of pain. After all, we’ve all been there, done that. Where we think this is THE love of our life and we don’t get him/her, we’ll die!! LOL!! So we tried to find some middle ground and Papa finally agreed to invite the girl’s father over and discuss the ’situation’ with him.

Initially, the brother was very mad about this. He insisted that this was not the proper way and the girl’s father should not be bothered unless a formal proposal was made. We convinced him that it was ok to invite the father since our uncles had once visited them too. He finally agreed cuz he had nothing to lose. And that is where the situation currently stands. The girl’s father is supposed to come today. I’m not sure what will transpire.

Papa was kind of hoping that when the girl’s father comes here and meets our family, he will be able to see how “different” we are from them and as the girl’s father, he will be concerned about these differences and will probably decide that his daughter can not adjust here and we’ll be off the hook. I don’t think that’s fair of Papa but who am I to say anything? In case Papa’s hopes shatter, he had plan B. He’s gonna tell the girl’s father that there is no way he can commit for a wedding for at least 3-4 years and if the father is ok with that, then and only then will there be some kind of engagement. This is what the brother says too, that there will be no wedding for 3-4 years, just please, an engagement. Papa was skeptical about this and so wanted to make sure.

So that’s the whole drama. Of course I left out the emotional blackmail inflicted upon everyone by the little brother, the long and sometimes infuriated responses Papa provides and my own personal stand that the brother is simply too young for all of this. I will update you about the outcome of the meeting.

And hang in there.. there’s more drama to come later! LOL!!
